CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Roland Deschain
CANON: The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
AGE: Roland appears to be about thirty-six, but has been alive for many hundreds, possibly thousands of years.
CANON POINT: Post-The Dark Tower (Book VII)

BACKGROUND: Dark Tower Wikia.
INCENTIVE/FIT: Roland has dedicated his entire life to the search for the Dark Tower, the nexus of existence, and it’s when he finally reaches it and climbs to the very top that he discovers one thing: he has done this before, and countless times. Every time he approaches the final door of the Tower, that door takes him back to the beginning of his journey, leaving Roland in a perpetual cycle. Going through the door takes away his memories, restores anything he lost along the way (including people who died), heals any injuries sustained – essentially resetting him, like re-loading a game at an earlier save, until the next time he goes through the door at the top of the Tower. This time, though, there is an Eudio representative through the door: Roland asks that he go through with this cycle and forget what he knows, but this must be the last time. Whatever choices he makes and whatever he does, they have to stick this time - this is his final chance, and he must live and die with his choices.

addendum: Roland has since gone to the Eudio representatives and asked for an amendment to his incentive - he wants his memories back. All of them. Whatever that means. In this case, it means the memory of every cycle he's been through is now something he carries.

Roland has very few hang-ups regarding physical intimacy, either sexual or platonic, and although he isn’t a warm or physical person by his nature, he considers himself very adaptable – first and foremost he’s pragmatic, keen on fulfilling his end of the bargain. Roland comes from a different universe, which gives him a few struggles regarding technology - he firstly has trouble with reading our letters (he experiences something similar to severe dyslexia), and secondly does not have access to any technology (including cars, electricity), back in his world, making everything more or less very new for him.

He cries for mercy at the top of the tower, screams for it until his voice is hoarse and raw and mercy! not again! let me free of this, don’t make me do it again, don’t let me go through it again! dissolves into nothing but pitiful shrieks; and somewhere between that door and the next life comes an offer: we can make an end of it for you.

Yes, Roland almost says, tired, hungry for reprieve, for rest, for safety, for it all to be over – but he casts his mind’s eye (and in the land of memory, the time is always now) back over what he’s lost, what missteps he has made, what he has done. He weeps so openly now for the weight of all he knows: for the deaths of people that he has loved for hundreds of cycles and resets, for the same failures and crimes he has done over and over without knowledge, and oh, what he would give to make it different –

what he would give to never reach the Tower.

His fingers (only seven, two healed stumps and one brand new and bloody, all on his right hand) grasp at the representative in front of him, a terrible reverence, o holy they are, to offer me this, and his voice cracks on every word, a desperate, wanting whisper: ‘Thee will let me start again,’ yes, let me walk through that door, take my mind, restore my guns and hands and body to me, ‘Let this be the last. Let me die bearing the mistakes of this do-over, and never start again.’

Not ever again.

And the land of memory empties. The names of those he loves (Eddie and Susannah and Jake and Oy and Callahan and Rosalita and, and, and, the list goes on, this man with a heart for loving that he once believed was rot) flee him: dust on the wind, ka like the wind.

Fingers loosening. The deal has been made. A tired murmur, all sorrow and not knowing why: ‘Thankee-sai.'

ANYTHING ELSE? Roland owns two identical guns with sandalwood handles and would bring those with him. He has no actual powers to speak of, but is skilled in hypnotism (which he cannot do without consent, as it's harder that way anyway) and sometimes experiences very, very brief flashes of telepathy called ‘the touch’, neither of which would have any bearing on his fit in Eudio.
